A great general contractor can truly make the project work. You want someone that will deal with you honestly and fairly, and that won't walk out on you if things get difficult.

Steve and I have had the unhappy misfortune of hiring a general contractor that decided to abandon us and our project when the going got tough. The problems that happened as a result of that abandonment are issues we would not wish on anyone.
